Richmond Football Club recently announced a three-year preferred charity partnership with The Alannah & Madeline Foundation and its Better Buddies Framework.

Located in Craigieburn in Melbourne, Aitken Creek Primary School is one of three schools Richmond Football Club has sponsored to participate in the Better Buddies Framework.

The Better Buddies Games key event is held each year in May. The event encourages Better Buddies schools across Australia to participate in non-competitive activities where all students feel included. The games reinforce the importance of being active and give children a way to include each other outside normal buddy activity times.

Better Buddies Games highlight the importance of cooperation, sharing and taking turns, negotiation, managing conflict and other important pro-social skills. In addition, it provides students with a range of games they could play during break times, which also helps to reduce bullying and other negative behaviours.

Richmond Football Club’s staff and players were keen to participate in Better Buddies Games, as it provided an opportunity to share the players’ and coaching staffs’ skills and sporting knowledge with the senior buddies.

The club funded busses for the senior buddies at Aitken Creek Primary School to travel from Craigieburn to Richmond (a 45-minute trip) to meet some of the players and coaching staff, and learn simple games conducted by the players. The senior buddies will now return to school and teach their junior buddies the games and skills they learnt during the day.

In addition to hosting the games day, Tigers players, Shaun Grigg and Nathan Foley, recorded a demonstration video of games buddies can play together. This video is a resource for all buddy pairs around Australia to watch and then have a go at the games themselves.

Thank you to the Richmond Football Club staff, players and coaches for your support and enthusiasm for Better Buddies Games and for being such great role models for our buddies.
