Better Buddies Book Week provides an avenue for buddies to engage in activities together based around literacy and books - this includes reading, writing and illustrating books, as well as talking about characters and themes.
Better Buddies Book Week is designed to coincide with Children's Book Week - August 21st - 27th. This year's theme is Across the Story Bridge. It is an opportunity to promote the enjoyment of reading and literature and give buddies another way to communicate and enjoy each others company.
Better Buddies activities can run for an afternoon, a day, or a week. Every school will run their Better Buddies Book Week a bit differently, so it's important to plan early and book time in so that all classes involved are aware. This can be an activity organised by the older buddies such as a parade, or book reading session of books they have written, to more subtle buddy reading during library time or the first 15 minutes of every day.
In 2010, the Better Buddies Team has developed a new unit of work for Better Buddies Schools for Book Week called Buddies for Wildlife. This unit focusses on the picture story book A Diary of a Wombat and highlights our native wildlife. This unit of work is available through the teacher log in section on this website, or contact the Better Buddies Team for more details.
Buddies for Wildlife includes stories, storyboards, videos and actual photos of animals from wildlife shelters, with a focus on wombats.
