Avoca Primary School celebrates

2 - Avoca Primary School celebrates

On Monday 15th of September, Avoca Primary School hosted a Better Buddies celebration for next year’s prep students and

The older buddies set up wonderful array of activities to demonstrate what they do as part of their Better Buddies - the students ate lunch together and then participated in tabloid sports, all set up and run by the older buddies. There was buddy reading and dancing and even a visit from Sam, the local baker, who has been teaching the buddies at Avoca Primary School how to cook. they invited us to attend!

The day concluded with a visit from Buddy Bear and the unveiling of their official Better Buddies school sign.

We were lucky enough to receive a special gift of six canvases representing the Better Buddies values painted by the students at Avoca Primary school. We have displayed them in The Alannah & Madeline Foundation office in South Melbourne – they look great (pictured).

Principal, Michelle Wilson, said they use the Better Buddies values to “create a consistent, clear, visual framework to underpin all learning, work and conversations with students, staff and the wider community...Our senior students feel they are valued peer mentors and our early years students feel safe and know who to ask when they feel uncertain.”

She also described the playground as “like a large family at play,” and commented that, “learning time is maximised because student management issues are not disrupting learning.”
